The Story Behind Luke's 1981 BMW 320i (E21)
This 1981 BMW 320i (E21) is looking for its next owner, but before it finds its new home, here is the story behind this unique BMW.
Luke purchased the car in 2020 from a well-known member of the vintage BMW community. It was dubbed “50 Shades of Gray” for its faded gray paint, but looking at the car, Luke knew it had the potential to be something special. It started as “mostly stock, but with nice interior panels and a limited slip differential already installed.” With a solid starting point, Luke quickly turned the car into a fun pandemic project, beginning the process of modifying it into something of his own.
What initially made you want to buy the car?
“The guy I bought it from filled me in on all the details. I loved the E21 because they’re not as common as E30s or 2002s and are often overlooked. I wanted to make one as cool as possible and was inspired by the E21 race cars from the 1980s.”
The E21 was the first model in BMW’s 3 Series. As Luke mentioned, it was often overlooked, but it helped shape the BMW brand we know today. The E21 set the tone for BMW’s driver-focused approach, and it also became the foundation for their legacy in motorsports. Inspired by BMW’s Group 2 race cars, Luke brought that racing influence into his own design.
What has been your favorite thing to work on?
“The paint and livery were a lot of fun for me. I got to express my artistic side, and it was extremely satisfying to see the results.”
The modifications began, and Luke turned the faded gray BMW into a gold racing-inspired machine. His original goal was to turn it into a track car that could also be driven on the street, but it ended up being purely street focused, after switching to another track project.
Luke added features such as an Alpina front valence, BMW 2002 Turbo flares, and a rear ducktail. He reworked the rear sheet metal, so it resembled the European E21 without bumpers. On the interior, he painted the metal white and removed the original carpeting. He also added two Corbeau racing seats.
What is one of your favorite memories with the car?
“Doing a Breakfast Club Rally with my friend down in Monterey/Carmel. Lots of open backroads and good company. The E21 was the perfect car for it.”
Luke has made many memories over the years with his car, but notes that there is still significant potential for the next owner to unlock in development and speed. And, considering how much attention it gets out on the road or at events, the next owner should be ready for plenty of pictures!
