Item description from the seller

This 1981 BMW 320i (E21) was acquired by the seller in 2020 from a well-known member of the vintage BMW community. The car was originally dubbed “50 Shades of Gray” due to its faded factory metallic gray paint, but was a well preserved CA car. The E21 came with quality interior panels and a limited-slip differential already installed, and has since been modified by the seller to resemble a 1980s Group 2 race car but has remained primarily street focused. The BMW is currently registered out of state but can pass smog in California and has a clean title.

The exterior features an Alpina front valence and BMW 2002 Turbo flares, both of which have been modified to fit the E21. The rear ducktail is from a European Mk1 Ford Capri. The rear sheet metal has been reworked to resemble the European E21s without bumpers. The car is finished in a gold single stage paint, with the stripes and rear trunk in vinyl, and was completed in 2023.

The interior metal has been painted white, and the original carpeting has been removed. It features two Corbeau racing seats, and the door cards and rear panels remain in good condition. The rear seat area is ready to accommodate a bolt-in roll hoop or can be returned to use as a seat or storage area. The sunroof is currently secured in place and not functional; however, all the components needed for rebuilding are available.

The M10 engine was rebuilt around 2010 and runs well with no reported oil consumption. The air-conditioning system is fully functional. The suspension features uprated bushings, an IrelandEngineering differential mount, a limited-slip differential, uprated sway bars, and a coilover conversion with adjustable spring perches and Eibach track springs. The car has Toyo R888 tires and, according to the seller, handles beautifully with excellent grip.

The odometer reads 277k miles although virtually every mechanical component has been serviced/replaced at least once in the car's life and, to the seller’s knowledge, has never been in an accident. It has a solid body with only slight corrosion around the right-rear taillight, where the seal has previously leaked, but is now mostly sealed. The car has been regularly serviced, including a new shift linkage and brake replacement in 2021. The engine has received regular oil changes, and the gear oil was changed in 2025.

This is not a show car, but rather a nicely presented street/track E21 with potential for development and speed for the next owner to extract. According to the seller, the car turns heads wherever it goes, so expect to have photos taken of you on the highway or at events!
